Beige Beauties like it long and lean

The long dress for daytime was another statement seen during fashion week. A trend that I can only imagine will increase in popularity come the summer months as it's an easy way to dress. Both of these women chose to accessorize with hats and while one added actual fur, the fox on the other was an animal friendly print.

NYFW trend - feathers reigned, especially in Black

Feathers were EVERYWHERE. Whether it was the influence of Rodarte or the Black Swan je ne sais pas de tout, but let me tell you  that literally every show had someone showing their own twist to the feather trend. I have to say that I think jackets in general were more successful than skirts. The skirts tended to be short and unless the wearer was very tall and thin the look was less than flattering. (hence no photos!)

NYFW tent trend: fur - part 1

Everywhere you looked, both on the runway and off a huge trend was FUR. Fur stoles, capes, coats and hats. Faux or furocious, If there was a way to wear fur someone wore it. Some was more successful than others of course! There was so much fur I'm doing 3 posts devoted solely to fur... what do you think of fur? pro? con? Why is it so prevalent now?

NYFW tent trend: Over-the-knee boots

As much as I love seeing what the designers have created I love seeing what ideas from previous seasons have taken hold. Over the knee boots were big the last few seasons on the runway and they were everywhere on the audiences at the shows -and even on some of the girls working at the tents. (and on some of the runways although others had more just up-to-the-knee options) And for those who liked the look but didn't have the boots the thigh high stockings with nylons beneath achieved the same effect admirably.

Quick View - Study NY

Study NY is definitely one of the shows that I'm hearing more buzz about this fashion season. And why not? It's fresh and with it's focus on sustainable fabrics and fair trade standards it fits the zeitgeist of the moment. The great designs will keep Tara St. James clothes front and center beyond a mere 15 minutes. Review coming soon!

Seen at RETNA presented by Vladimir Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida

Last Thursday night (has it already been almost a week?) there was an opening in Tribeca of LA grafitti artist RETNA that looked like it was out of a film about Soho in the Eighties. The space was dark and cavernous and full of people that were both very stylish and somehow distinctly New York. The coat on the right caught my eye in a black sea and the graphic energy seemed to match the artwork. It also seems to be part of the new looser, graphic trend emerging that I'm calling boho chic. The girl on the left is also on trend with the fashion crowd in her over the knee platform boots. Something I've seen ALOT of in the tents: maybe because other than fashion week you might get mistaken as a hooker?

Quick View - Logan Neitzel

In his latest collection, "Brood," Logan continued his tradition of clothes with a darker sensibility and plenty of leather - including face masks. A longer review coming soon.

Quickview - Rachel Antonoff's Dance

I loved the presentation of designer Rachel Antonoff. Set up in a real highschool gym the models were transformed into students at a dance. Awkwardly dancing and seemingly oblivious of their beauty they perfectly embodied the innocent adolescence of the Brady Bunch era. Having The Like perform was an added bonus!

Quickview - Gregory Parkinson

I'm seeing two main threads in the shows this season: a continuation of body-conscious minimalism in blacks, greys and whites and Boho Chic: lots of layers and patterns. Gregory Parkinson's luxe designs clearly fall into the latter. Look for a longer review and more photos next week!

Because you've always coveted the triple M your favorite store Opening Ceremony is giving you some at a pricepoint within your zone. Their quirky presentation had girls dressing/undressing/switching clothes...but not like where your head is going! And you can see my stop motion of it here

Seen at the Seven party at the Tribeca Grand

Have I told you that the fashion week party by Seven New York is one of my favorites? Sure there are alot of parties this week associated with major magazines and alot of designer after parties, and admittedly many of them are great as well! But this party always has a fun relaxed atmosphere without the networking/strategizing vibe that infects other events during NYFW. And some of the best style around! So thanks Steve, Joseph and Tribeca Grand for your swell event!

Modern Nomads

Tonight I went to a night before official fashion week beginning fashion show at the Soho Grand. It had a very hippie/70s vibe to it that I found surprisingly enjoyable. (not normally being a fan of anything that could be construed as "flower power") I thought this couple -NOT in the show- seemed to work with the overall vibe. See a photo from the show at Pixie Warhol and a little video from my iphone on YouTube...and so NYFW begins!

From EVA NYC shoot

You know that Fashion Week is around the corner. And if you're like me, you are already wondering what you're going to wear. (hopefully I am not the only one already thinking about it!) While there are plenty of women attending shows in sky high heels and small dresses I have to be comfortable because I'm there all day shooting the looks of those attending the shows when I'm not at a show myself. I think something like this from EVA New York would totally work – and I love the oversized bag to keep my camera and everything else in.
Modeled by Katy from Sugarlaws
Barbara Gongini sweater vest, The Twenty Ten top, Stylein leggings,
Collina Strada  leather Hobo, Collina Strada X EVA Bracelets.

Overdue View on AAU

Designer: April Howard, Model: Ming Xi, Photo: Randy Brook
Academy of Art University in San Francisco is one of the few MFA programs for fashion design in the country and they're the only one whose graduating class shows at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. This year I didn't make it to their show because unfortunately it was scheduled smack in the middle of Fashion's Night Out. Ian MacKintosh of AAU promised me that this would not happen again and kindly sent me photos from the show.  I consistently love the Academy's show and the downtown edge that it contributes to the uptown part of NYFW. See more looks from April and other designers and read my review here.

Kristin Cavallari does short and flirty

nyfw-2girlsinFlwrs
Shorter skirt lengths haven't disappeared yet, and I don't think they will in entirety. These lengths look fresher with fitted waists and fuller skirts like these two. Kristin Cavallari, on the right, is wearing Zac Posen and both of these girls kept the make up light and the jewelry to a minimum, managing to look sweet –not saccharine.

The long way round

black_white
Hemlines dropped precipitously in the Spring collections which I personally find less than thrilling. Since I'm barely 5'4" on a good day I tend to like skirts a bit shorter. However if I looked this chic in a long skirt I might be persuaded...

The Quirky Fashion Blogger: A new breed at NYFW

quirky2
quirky1

Fashion week tends to have a predictable cast of characters. The briskly walking and tightly wound PR girls, the Dandies in spats or bow ties, avant-gardists in Comme des Garcons or Rick Owens, loyal clients in one designer head to toe, and the outsiders who stand on the wrong side of the velvet ropes patiently waiting for a glimpse of their favorite celebrity. Although they have been around for a few seasons I would like to introduce to you the "Quirky Fashion Blogger". Her role model is Tavi or Susie Bubble, she dresses like a little girl playing with high fashion and would ace the SAT if the history of fashion was a topic. I thought these two were perfect specimens of this new breed. Both of them slightly odd and very sweet, one carried a matching doll and the other had an agent in tow.(which kind of amounts to the same thing)

Simply Chic

simplyChic
So the Huffington Post put me in their Street Style Round up especially because I shoot nightlife style. And ironically it's just past NYFW so all I'm showing is the style of those who came to the shows. But it's so great I can't NOT share it! This girl has the look of someone I could be friends with: her style is elegant yet personal and details like the slouchy sweater and how comfortable it looks altogether gives it a "I don't try too hard" vibe that I really appreciate. The only thing I don't like is the Gucci bag. I am not a fan of alot of logo bags and vintage or not, she could use a different one. But that's me...

NYFW: Women in Black

WIB2
The incomparable Ms. Sophia Lamar always turns it out, so why would fashion week be any different? The brilliant leggings are by Agamic and I love the bubble shorts and floppy bowtie and Ray Bans.

WIB1
This girl, Cecilia, spoke english with a bit of an accent but informed me that her t-shirt is Prada, the leggings Max Mara, shoes from Top Shop and bag by Balenciaga. And really, what more do we need to know?
