If you were a harajuku girl that fell asleep one night in your cozy flat (injapanese city) and woke up in 1985 on the bowery, you might be scared. But how would you cope? by dressing the part of course!?

Gala Darling rocks pink and black
Gala Darling is a blogger that seems to be a bit controversial: people think she's a blogger's best friend who gives business advice on making a living from a blog or a rich girl living off of a trust fund who pretends to make a living...I neither know nor care (although the fact she took off commenting does give me pause). In any case before I knew much about any of that I took this photo. And anyone who knows me well knows I am almost magnetically drawn to hot pink...even though I never wear it myself! So it's good to have a little out there in the world! And if you have a more informed opinion of Ms. Darling feel free to comment below!

Little Red Ridinghood takes Manhattan
Technically the hood is black but it's the red that is popping here. And her super blue eyes. Which just proves simplicity can be simply eye-catching.

Shaved sides still going strong
If they made a new Star Wars movie and Rick Owens was the costume designer maybe the end result would be something like this.

NYFW trend - feathers reigned, especially in Black
Feathers were EVERYWHERE. Whether it was the influence of Rodarte or the Black Swan je ne sais pas de tout, but let me tell you that literally every show had someone showing their own twist to the feather trend. I have to say that I think jackets in general were more successful than skirts. The skirts tended to be short and unless the wearer was very tall and thin the look was less than flattering. (hence no photos!)

The always lovely Geoffrey LaRue
Geoffrey jumped into a garbage can for me the first night I met him and he has charmed me ever since!
I fell in love with his blazer that he made himself and his dandified style in general.

Self Portrait Sunday

I am IN LOVE with my new Diane von Furstenberg jacket. It's silk and covered with fabric roses that are all hand made and is a great boxy cut. What really makes it work for me is that some of the roses are shiny black almost like vinyl and the edges are cut raw with pinking shears – the combination of those 2 details keeps it from being merely floral and gives it more visual interest. I plan on keeping this for life! Also I decided to really blow out the exposure in the photos so you can see the details...I'm so pale that my hair gets lost in the first photo but oh well!
Also wearing: D&G shades (always lately), Seven for all Mankind shoes and vintage Blue Cult jeans.

Alex & Elle
I don't normally post photos that are not full length but I loved this one of Alex & Elle. I love how Alex will just wear a tunic out in the dead of winter in NYC and Elle's leather piece (scarf?) is great.

Reality Bites
Remember 1994? Winona Ryder when she was known for her acting? This girl looks like she walked out of a central casting audition for Reality Bites, the iconic grunge era movie –complete with the requisite plaid shirt wrapped around her waist. I do like that she is wearing platform heel booties instead of Doc Martens. (which of course are coming back now as well!)

a not-a-self-portrait portrait
I will be dead honest: I could never ever be one of those bloggers who daily post photos of themselves. Because I think I'm kind of funny looking and am starting to think my hair looks really odd in photos and maybe I should change it up a bit...just not sure how I'd want to yet. Also I think I prefer to be behind the camera but sometimes it's hard to take the photo you want without help. Here I am with my dog Nasdaq in Brooklyn. I'm wearing my Rag & Bone shorts that I love except that they are a bit big so I tend to pull them up a bit. I'm wearing re.Uzz leggings made out of recycled cashmere sweaters so that keeps the shorts from falling down too much. The sweater is cashmere as well and I found it at this crazy place in Queens where there are literally mounds of clothes and it costs $20 per bag of clothes no matter the items. The holes were in the sweater when I found it but it was a mint green so I dyed it. The jacket is by Silence & Noise from Urban Outfitters and boots by Nine West. Anyways, even though it rained today I appreciated the mild temperatures because it's supposed to get cold again later this week. So happy Sunday!

Beautiful Boys @AvenueNYC
Sometimes the best thing about not going out is how much fun it is again when you do go out. The other night I stopped by Avenue where Greggor (on left) was hosting. And it was so nice to see him and River (right). In a city full of "the beautiful people" these two easily rank high on my personal list.

Skirting the lengths
We all saw a return to longer skirt lengths on the Spring 2011 runways this fall. And little by little I'm seeing this out at night as well. This girl appears to be trying to have the best of both worlds by working a longer lace dress over a smaller body-con black one. It's an interesting alternative and one I haven't seen before. The messily pulled back hair and filigreed belt buckle gives it a slight prairie girl vibe but she saved it from being too referential to country by avoiding cowboy boots and sticking with some great black platform booties.

3 on Bond Street
I saw these 3 on Bond Street. One of my favorite streets in NYC. It's just a few blocks but there's this crazy building on it that I love architecturally plus OAK NYC which is one of my favorite stores...and Bond no. 9 - another favorite where all the perfumes are named after places in New York and Daryl K -where I spent $110 each on 2 pairs of super low rise stretch pants like 12 years ago when super low was relatively new and $110 for a pair of pants seemed outrageous to me. (and then $110 seemed reasonable, now it seems outrageous again–**and nothing at Daryl K comes close to $110 so I don't much shop there anymore) But this isn't about me or Bond Street! Why do I like them? Dunno I just do. I especially love the furry muppet jacket of the girl in the middle.
**I stand corrected. The day after I posted this I received an email from Jovonnie who works at Daryl K that said I found a few items that you may like that are under $110, such as the Black Shirt Dress which retails for $90, the Leather Shoulder Purse which retails for $75, the Chambray Rolled-Sleeve Shirt which retails for $70, the Tie-Dyed Safari Jacket which retails for $60, and the Leopard Camisole which retails for $50. Hopefully these items will make you want to come back to Daryl K to shop!
So you know I will be stopping by there soon & finding something for my self-portrait not a portrait!

Skirts and Tails

Whether they are going to become the norm on the runway it's too soon to tell, but I'm definitely seeing more boys in skirts than I have in the past. This one is rocking a traditional looking tartan with his unlaced black boots fringed bag and fur tail.

And he is also wearing a skirt –but of the minimal black variation– with similar boots and tail. Where did they get the style memo? Particularly since they are from opposite coasts as the one in the black is visiting from LA. While I truthfully don't get the fur tail thing –which I'm seeing everywhere at the moment– I totally applaud boys having fun with fashion and stepping outside of the norm.

NYFW: Women in Black

The incomparable Ms. Sophia Lamar always turns it out, so why would fashion week be any different? The brilliant leggings are by Agamic and I love the bubble shorts and floppy bowtie and Ray Bans.

This girl, Cecilia, spoke english with a bit of an accent but informed me that her t-shirt is Prada, the leggings Max Mara, shoes from Top Shop and bag by Balenciaga. And really, what more do we need to know?

Material Girl off limits. How about Material Boy?

So in some kind of ironic twist of fate, news came out today that Madonna has been sued for using "Material Girl" for her first line for Macy's. Apparently some other brand Trademarked that in 97. You would think association would win out – Madonna really did brand "Material Girl" way before '97. On the other hand, her (IMAO) choice of Taylor Momsen as the spokesgirl for her line leaves little to be desired and this might be her own karmic retribution...if she was looking for a Material BOY however, I think he's right here.

Playing with model/friend Colleen Koltick

Colleen walking in the street
So a few days before I went to Madrid this summer, I met up with my friend Colleen to play around with a lens I was renting from Adorama. It was wicked hot so we spent the day wandering around the Lower East Side and wondering why no one else thought 1 pm was a brilliant time to begin Happy Hour on a Tuesday? Regardless of no Happy Hour and the wicked heat we managed to amuse ourselves. So thought this post would be a little different and I would show some photos from that day. Also make sure to check her out in the September issue of Elle modeling for her BFF Malan Breton!

We stopped in a thrift store and the shopkeeper showed Colleen the proper way to wear fur.

She practiced...

and practiced...

and finally got it right! ;)

Simplicity in Black

I think this girl is totally adorable. I love the high waisted shorts and how she chose to wear no jewelry. ...and how she is totally oblivious to how he seemed to have a spill...

2 girls and a hat

I had a shite day so I'm keeping this brief. Love these girls –especially the hat, clutch and shoes of the one on the right!

Forever 21

I took this photo at a Forever 21 party and I have to say they look more downtown than Times Square... but we all love free cocktails. I also love: their hair, specs and the pleated skirt.
